Joanna Chu-Liao, Fashion Designer
Having grown up in a garment-manufacturing family, Joanna Chu-Liao has developed her fashion sense by being exposed to the world of textiles, prints and patterns at an early age. After spending years studying abroad and cultivating her skills as a fashion designer, Chu-Liao was scouted by Japanese companies Itochu and Look Japan to design ready-to-wear collections that were sold in major department stores like Mitsukoshi and Barneys New York. During the ten years of working for Japanese companies, she also designed uniforms for Estee Lauder and Folli Follie. In 2011
, she took the leap in starting her own brand, Jo’s Ready to Wear, aimed at satisfying the fashion palette of modern women who are not just blind followers of fashion. The label has garnered much acclaim for embodying a contradiction of feminity and a harsher, rock-and-roll edge.
